There is nothing quite like a peaceful Sunday spent thrifting. It is usually far less hectic than the Saturday rush, making it the perfect time to explore new spots, slow down, and hunt for hidden treasures.

Recently, while scrolling through Craigslist for new places to check out, I stumbled upon a listing for Church in the Highlands in White Plains, New York. Intrigued, I decided to drive over—and I am so incredibly glad I did.

Here is why this historic community staple needs to be at the top of your thrift-hunting list.

A Hidden Gem Reopens

Church in the Highlands has officially reopened its beloved Resale Shop, located in the lower level of the church.

During my visit, I had the pleasure of speaking with Mimi, the shop’s manager. Her excitement about the reopening is contagious, and she is eager to get the word out to local thrifters, neighbors, and supporters.

Because the shop was closed for a while, they are essentially starting from scratch and actively seeking donations. If you are decluttering, they are accepting almost everything, including:

  • Men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing
  • Household goods and kitchen items
  • Home décor, books, and toys

Note: The only items they currently cannot accept are large furniture pieces.

Shopping with a Purpose

What makes this shop truly special is its deep roots and mission. The Church in the Highlands is a historic community fixture over 100 years old. Founded in 1921, it is a congregation of the United Church of Christ (formed by the 1957 union of the Congregational Christian Churches and the Evangelical and Reformed Church).

Every single dollar raised at the Resale Shop goes right back into the church and local outreach programs. When you shop or donate here, your purchases directly support the neighborhood and families in need.

More Than Just Shopping

Beyond the thrift shelves, the church offers a welcoming space for mindfulness. They host Intimate Meditation sessions, where anyone from the community is welcome to come, step away from the noise of daily life, and find peace for a couple of hours.
