ToniOnThrifting – Thrift Shopping Made Simple

Women’s Club of White Plains – their pop-up sales are incredible! — November 27, 2022

Women’s Club of White Plains – their pop-up sales are incredible!

The Thrift Shop in White Plains had been in continuous operation since November 11, 1918.  It had been the oldest thrift shop in New York State, possibly in the country. The idea of a Thrift Exchange, as it was called, grew out of the national desire to reuse and recycle items to aid the war effort. The original Thrift Exchange was held in the Tod Market on the corner of Court Street and Martine Avenue. The building is still in existence. In 1923 the Thrift Shop moved to a barn behind the old Preudhomme residence on Church Street. It remained at that location for 50 years until finally moving to its final place in the White Plains Presbyterian Church on North Broadway. The Shop was a 501c3 entity jointly owned by the Woman’s Club of White Plains, the Scarsdale Woman’s Club, and the Hitchcock Presbyterian Church in Scarsdale, with proceeds donated to local charities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Thrift Shop of White Plains was forced to close its doors and was disbanded in 2022. The Woman’s Club of White Plains will continue the Thrift Shop of White Plains tradition and operate out of its clubhouse at 305 Ridgeway in White Plains.  Credit: https://www.womansclubofwhiteplains.org/about.html

The Woman’s Club of White Plains has pop-ups throughout the year and a regular shopping day on Tuesdays from 10 am until 12 pm.  Their next pop-up is on Saturday, December 3rd, from 9 am until 1 pm. The selections are all high quality and priced to sell. I cannot emphasize enough that these pop-ups are not to be missed. As for me, I have purchased some fantastic pieces that have become favorites in my wardrobe. Prices start at $4.00 (yes, $4.00) and upwards for the regular shop items, with high-end/boutique items more than reasonably priced. They also carry shoes, men’s and women’s winter clothing, and accessories. They have beautiful housewares and hosting serveware not to be missed. They will also be carrying high-end Christmas décor at the pop-up.  The pictures shown are from one of their most recent pop-ups.

The volunteers are incredible, friendly, and helpful. They arrange areas for you to try on clothes (a major plus) and are devoted to raising money to help people in need in White Plains. I recently spoke to Judy Korman, Chair of the Thrift Shop and Marking, and I commend her on the great work the Woman’s Club of White Plains is doing and ALL the local charities that benefit from the work of these incredible women. Some of the previous recipients of their philanthropy include the White Plains Library, the YWCA, victims of domestic violence, and so many others.

There are also some fantastic and fun events to promote the thrift shop.  They recently hosted a Sip & Swap where you can bring clothes and accessories to donate and take home donated items. They provide drinks and bites; if you are not a member, the great price is $10.00 for entry.  I missed the last one but planned on being at the next one.

St Bartholomew’s Thrift Shop – Never Judge A Book … — January 24, 2016

St Bartholomew’s Thrift Shop – Never Judge A Book …

IMG_1223

When you first walk into St Bartholomew’s Thrift Shop, it looks ordinary.  PLEASE don’t let it fool you. It turns out that it is one of the most extraordinary thrift shops I have ever set foot in. The majority of their donations come from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Thrift Shop in New York City.  That should tell you right there that they have phenomenal stock. And the rest is not so bad either 🙂 🙂 🙂 I think their specialty is clothing although they carry housewares as well. The prices are well below what you pay in other thrift stores in the area. Women’s tops start at $3.00 and men’s just a dollar or two more. They have good shoe section with equally appealing prices. Look all around the shop, they have hidden treasures everywhere!

Fortunately or unfortunately, only a small part of the shop is dedicated to housewares. The housewares they do have are high quality. I bought a ceramic serving platter for $6.00 – the price was marked $40.00 on the back –(from the MSK thrift shop I am sure). I also purchased beautiful wine glasses for $1.00 EACH.

This is a definitely hit or miss thrift shop (I have gone back a few times and have had many more hits than misses.) This is certainly worth the trip every time, it has been for me. Especially the when I scored a Land’s End wrap dress for $6.00.

The staff is remarkable – professional, kind and courteous. The shop is small and has limited hours and it gets crowded on Saturdays so get there when they open. When they get fresh stock, it feels like Christmas. You just never know what you are going to find. Top name brands, high quality merchandise all the way. Stop in, it is highly unlikely you will be disappointed —- and you will even be pleasantly surprised.

Women’s Guild White House Thrift Shop at St. Gregory’s in White Plains — October 22, 2015

Women’s Guild White House Thrift Shop at St. Gregory’s in White Plains

I love the thrift shop at St. Gregory the Enlightener Armenian Church. It is run by The Women’s Guild of the church. They have the most beautiful china and serving pieces you can imagine plus so many other lovely items. Just real high quality merchandise at reasonable prices. The most incredible part of this shop is that they carry Michael Arem items at exceptional prices. I happen to be a Michael Arem fan and I find his pieces to be exquisite and unique. I hope you can see some of his work in the pictures.

The heartbreaking part is that they are only open on Thursdays from 12 pm until 4 pm. Trust me, I lobbied and lobbied when I was there. I mentioned that to these lovely ladies that this shop is far too wonderful not to be open more. People need to see what a gem of this shop is.

They do not carry clothes but do carry some accessories and lots of kitchen stuff (in one of the back rooms). The best part of the shop is the “dining room” area. They just had so many great pieces that I would love to use when entertaining. I am definitely going back as there were some pieces that I want to get for holiday entertaining. They have great demitasse sets, tea services, serving plates, candle holders, china, too much to list.
The women that run this shop are kind, compassionate and devoted to the success of this shop. So if you happen to stop in there, tell them to PLEASE PLEASE open at least one or two weekends a month. I promise that you will not be disappointed if you are able to get to this shop, it is a treasure.

Memorial Thrift Shop in White Plains — October 14, 2015

Memorial Thrift Shop in White Plains

This fine thrift shop is located downstairs in the Memorial United Methodist Church in White Plains and it supports The Loft. The Loft provides a safe gathering place for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and supportive community of New York’s lower Hudson Valley. The LOFT facilitates a wide range of educational, health, social service, and recreational programs, and advocates for improved services for our community.” Our mission is simple and strong: The LOFT, an LGBT community center, works to further the cause for inclusion, diversity and pride through education, advocacy, and celebration.” (This information is from their website). I just think that you should know that since 2009, this AMAZING church has shared their building with the LOFT. KUDOS!!!! 🙂

It is also open Monday through Saturday. I have been to this thrift shop before and with patience, (definitely worth it) you will find something special. The clothing section is compact and I saw a few nice vintage pieces. They have accessories, shoes, jeans, dresses, quite a bit. The walls along the corridor are lined with artwork and some home décor. They do have good old fashioned vinyl albums for one dollar. And I know that these are the rage right now. 🙂

They have a houseware section and I saw some lovely serving pieces that I regret not picking up especially with the holidays coming up. I will just have to make a trip back.

The one thing that I did notice is that the shop was not as jam packed with merchandise as it usually is. If you live in the White Plains area, I think it would be awesome if you have some items that can be donated; you should stop by and drop them off. Tax receipts provided (only donations not accepted are children’s toys and large furniture)
