American Cancer Society Discovery Shop in Chappaqua ( Update – Now Fantastic Finds) — November 4, 2015

American Cancer Society Discovery Shop in Chappaqua ( Update – Now Fantastic Finds)

IMG_1135 (2)

Who doesn’t love to entertain? With the holidays just around the corner, you may want to stop by the Discovery Shop in Chappaqua. This is an upscale thrift “boutique” that donates 100% of its proceeds to the American Cancer Society. It carries everything from fine china, crystal, art, furniture, bric-a-brac, and so much more. They also carry new and very gently used men’s and women’s clothing. All items in this shop are in pristine condition. Not to mention that this is the only American Cancer Society Discovery Shop in all of New York State (California has 40 Discovery Shops). That is why I HIGHLY recommend visiting this store, I promise you will not regret it. 🙂 🙂

IMG_1134 (1)

It is obviously in an affluent area so the merchandise is top notch and the prices are a little high to reflect that 🙂 —- BUT you are getting exceptional merchandise. It seems that the Discovery Shop is the recipient of some truly amazing donations. You could see this from going through the clothing racks, it is amazing. Everything is incredibly clean too. 🙂 🙂 🙂

IMG_1130

I thought they had some rather fine art work as well. So many timeless art pieces hang on the wall. There were some great posters too. Toys and small appliances are listed on the website but I was so excited doing my thing that I might have walked right past these items.  😦

IMG_1129

I will also tell you that this shop is all run by volunteers. They are one nicer than the other and so sweet and helpful. They care about their mission and it shows in their work. Visiting the Discovery Shop is well worth the effort and a must see.

Women’s Guild White House Thrift Shop at St. Gregory’s in White Plains — October 22, 2015

Women’s Guild White House Thrift Shop at St. Gregory’s in White Plains

I love the thrift shop at St. Gregory the Enlightener Armenian Church. It is run by The Women’s Guild of the church. They have the most beautiful china and serving pieces you can imagine plus so many other lovely items. Just real high quality merchandise at reasonable prices. The most incredible part of this shop is that they carry Michael Arem items at exceptional prices. I happen to be a Michael Arem fan and I find his pieces to be exquisite and unique. I hope you can see some of his work in the pictures.

IMG_1203
IMG_1204

The heartbreaking part is that they are only open on Thursdays from 12 pm until 4 pm. Trust me, I lobbied and lobbied when I was there. I mentioned that to these lovely ladies that this shop is far too wonderful not to be open more. People need to see what a gem of this shop is.

IMG_1209
IMG_1203

They do not carry clothes but do carry some accessories and lots of kitchen stuff (in one of the back rooms). The best part of the shop is the “dining room” area. They just had so many great pieces that I would love to use when entertaining. I am definitely going back as there were some pieces that I want to get for holiday entertaining. They have great demitasse sets, tea services, serving plates, candle holders, china, too much to list.
The women that run this shop are kind, compassionate and devoted to the success of this shop. So if you happen to stop in there, tell them to PLEASE PLEASE open at least one or two weekends a month. I promise that you will not be disappointed if you are able to get to this shop, it is a treasure.

I will also keep you updated when they have their weekend holiday sale!

Memorial Thrift Shop in White Plains — October 14, 2015

Memorial Thrift Shop in White Plains

This fine thrift shop is located downstairs in the Memorial United Methodist Church in White Plains and it supports The Loft. The Loft provides a safe gathering place for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and supportive community of New York’s lower Hudson Valley. The LOFT facilitates a wide range of educational, health, social service, and recreational programs, and advocates for improved services for our community.” Our mission is simple and strong: The LOFT, an LGBT community center, works to further the cause for inclusion, diversity and pride through education, advocacy, and celebration.” (This information is from their website). I just think that you should know that since 2009, this AMAZING church has shared their building with the LOFT. KUDOS!!!! 🙂

It is also open Monday through Saturday. I have been to this thrift shop before and with patience, (definitely worth it) you will find something special. The clothing section is compact and I saw a few nice vintage pieces. They have accessories, shoes, jeans, dresses, quite a bit. The walls along the corridor are lined with artwork and some home décor. They do have good old fashioned vinyl albums for one dollar. And I know that these are the rage right now. 🙂

IMG_1215
IMG_1214

They have a houseware section and I saw some lovely serving pieces that I regret not picking up especially with the holidays coming up. I will just have to make a trip back.

IMG_1212
IMG_1213

The one thing that I did notice is that the shop was not as jam packed with merchandise as it usually is. If you live in the White Plains area, I think it would be awesome if you have some items that can be donated; you should stop by and drop them off. Tax receipts provided (only donations not accepted are children’s toys and large furniture)

Irvington Presbyterian Church’s Attic Sale held on September 11th and 12th Recap — October 1, 2015

Irvington Presbyterian Church’s Attic Sale held on September 11th and 12th Recap

Just a quick report on the Irvington Presbyterian Church’s Attic Sale held on September 11th and 12th. To give you an idea on how successful this sale is, from 2000 – 2014, over $250,000 was raised and donated to many noteworthy organizations – just a few are Autism Speaks, Habitat for Humanity, Make-A-Wish, Salvation Army Food Pantry – it is quite an impressive list. I took some pictures because I DON’T THINK PEOPLE REALIZE JUST HOW BIG AND HOW GREAT THIS SALE IS. Please bear in mind, that I have been going on the second day, I can’t begin to imagine just how much merchandise I missed by not going on the first day. I understand that the home décor/ kitchen section pulled in a couple of thousand the first day.

IMG_1168

The men, women and children’s section was extensive and had clothes for all seasons including winter coats (which were being scooped up all over). The houseware section is amazing to say the least as well as all the other sections.

IMG_1169
IMG_1172

I went on Saturday (the second day) and had a blast—I had to make two trips to the car. I bought a red plastic table for my little porch ($2.00), an adorable large tin decorative holder ($5.00) that I will use to hold my cooking magazines. Journals for my writing were $1.00 Each, I bought two packs of greeting cards ($2.00 each), a Banana Republic long sleeve tee shirt ($4.00). The book section is very book lovers dream. They had to have thousands of books for just $2 and $3 for hardcovers. I saw quite a few new releases.

IMG_1167

I went through all f the following sections:
Accessories
Baby
Bakery
Books
Boutique
Café (the coffee was awesome)
Children’s Clothing & Shoes
Electronics
Furniture
Holiday
Housewares
Linens
Men’s Clothing & Shoes
Sporting Goods
Toys
Women’s Clothing & Shoes

I said it once and I will say it again, this sale should not be missed for thrift lovers. I will of course keep you posted on their next sale. I just wanted to share my experience and a couple of pictures.

Until next time, HAPPY SHOPPING!!!

Luxurious Consignment At The Penny Pincher In Bedford Hills, NY — September 1, 2015

Luxurious Consignment At The Penny Pincher In Bedford Hills, NY

If you absolutely love and want to have some luxury designer clothing and accessories, this consignment shop in Bedford Hills, New York is for you. The “Penny Pincher” carries Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Hermes, Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, Gucci and so many many more designers and all at consignment shop prices. They have sales (the day I stopped in there was 20% off select merchandise) and clearance so the odds are in your favor if you want to score a spectacular designer piece for your closet. There is a fabulous array of exquisite estate jewelry as well. It certainly is fun to browse through this store as the layout of the store is appealing and the jewelry displays are perfectly done. I must add that all the clothes, shoes and accessories are in immaculate condition and they absolutely guarantee authenticity. This boutique was voted repeatedly by Westchester Magazine as the “Best Consignment Shop”.

IMG_1121
IMG_1118

I found them to have a wonderful variety of clothing and accessories in all different sizes. You would be hard pressed not to be able to find a handbag or two or three to your liking. What I especially loved about this story was all the jewelry. Designer and estate jewelry — So many unique and exquisite pieces, I had to leave before I whipped out a charge card :).

IMG_1120

They also carry a variety of furniture, some artwork and lots of home décor (reasonably priced). Please check out their website as that will give you a much better idea of what the boutique carries – http://www.pennypincherboutique.com . You can even shop their Ebay store. This store is definitely worth stopping in if you are in the area, even to just window shop 🙂 !!

A Goodwill In Elmsford Not To Miss – Now Closed :( — August 20, 2015

A Goodwill In Elmsford Not To Miss – Now Closed :(

IMG_1161

I fell in love with this Goodwill the moment I walked in. It is spacious; clean with an incredibly friendly staff. (Thanks Janae for all your help and patience with me 🙂  you were great). I absolutely love love the layout, you can go through the roomy racks and shop with ease. Of course Sunday is a great sale day at Goodwill (two different color ticket items at 50% off ) and in my opinion, the best day to shop and I did very well for myself. I bought a Ralph Lauren denim skirt for $2.49 🙂  (almost new condition) and Ann Taylor (also almost new condition) slacks for $4.29. 🙂 (FYI – When I mention a label, it is with the intent that I would like my readers to know the quality of the merchandise that I am purchasing. 🙂

IMG_1163

What this Goodwill lacks in the casual/work dress selection (my favorite department) – it certainly makes up for in every other department.

The women’s’ section is filled with jeans, slacks, blouses, shirts, skirts, jackets and wide selection of coats. They also had a rack with women’s suits that were reasonably priced. I saw Harve Bernard, Ann Taylor, Calvin Klein, Jones of New York amongst others and all in great condition. The men’s section was equally as impressive with a very wide selection of merchandise. The shoe rack was amazing and if you are a women’s size 10 shoe especially, I would definitely check it out – the shoes were all stylish and quite a few (more than usual) were brand new.

I did not see too much art work, but what was out was in decent condition.

IMG_1162

The housewares section was extensive with the usual dishes, glassware, etc. What I did score on was a glass percolator for $7.99 (GREAT PRICE) and it had just got in the store a day earlier (Goodwill dates the items for when they came in). I just love percolator coffee from the stovetop; it is absolutely delish in my book.

All in all, I walked out with 2 pairs of pants, 2 skirts, a leopard scarf, a pair of shorts and my percolator for $23.62. Bear in mind I used $5 in Loyalty Points – but I still did brilliantly well and enjoyed my little excursion. I have a feeling that the store was not fully stocked on Sunday, it seems to be in a high traffic area – it had a nice crowd shopping on a Sunday morning. I can’t wait to see it fully stocked. This Good will is definitely worth a return trip or two or three. 🙂

CLOSED – New Rochelle’s Habitat For Humanity of Westchester ReStore (New and recently opened Habitat for Humanity ReStore is at 470 Nepperhan Av. in Yonkers.) — August 11, 2015

CLOSED – New Rochelle’s Habitat For Humanity of Westchester ReStore (New and recently opened Habitat for Humanity ReStore is at 470 Nepperhan Av. in Yonkers.)

What Habitat for Humanity does is give people affordable housing among many things. The Habitat for Humanity Restore in New Rochelle helps fund efforts for the Habitat of Humanity of Westchester. Last year Habitat for Humanity along with a multitude of volunteers was acknowledged for turning two formerly foreclosed houses in Yonkers into places to call home for two Iraq War veterans and their families in the newly named Battle Hill neighborhood. Also, Veterans Build is Habitat for Humanity of Westchester’s initiative to provide housing solutions and volunteer and employment opportunities to U.S. Veterans, Military Service Members and their families. What better reason do you need than this to go to this fairly new Restore to shop? Plus these stores were “green” long before it was “cool” to be green and did I say that the prices are reasonable.

IMG_1133

According to a recent article in the City Review New Rochelle article — In addition to class offerings, community activism and raising money for a variety of important causes, ReStore hires vulnerable members of the community that have faced challenges, including local veterans and fire victims that have lost their homes, and provides them with an honest way to make a living while giving back to the community.

IMG_1135

There is 10,000 (yes 10,000) square feet of retail space and it is filled with everything from furniture, lamps, home décor, appliances and so much more. Some of their stock is from the sets of television shows.

IMG_1134

The day that I stopped in they had a magnificent array of dinner wares, housewares, lamps, home décor, art work and so much more. They had shelves and shelves of the housewares. The furniture was in abundance and all in good condition and reasonably priced. I saw some wonderful home accent tables. The furniture at the Restore comes in a wide variety of decors so please go take a look. There is just so much to see, you will be pleasantly surprised at what the ReStore Offers.

Whether you are going off to college, moving into your first apartment or just want to update, this is a definite stop you should make!

Humane Society Of New Rochelle – NOW CLOSED :( — July 28, 2015

Humane Society Of New Rochelle – NOW CLOSED :(

IMG_1059

There are a lot people who hold the New Rochelle Humane Society Thrift Shop near and dear to their heart. I completely understand and you can tell from the exorbitant amount of donations they receive. The fact is that the New Rochelle Humane Society services over 19 communities in Westchester County and rescues over 500 dogs and 900 cats a year. They provide loving care to animals that have been lost, abandoned, injured, and mistreated. What a phenomenal organization and what uplifting work — I have nothing but respect for this organization.

Upon first glance, this shop looks stuffed to the gills and then after looking around you realize that it is and just overflowing with bargain after bargain 🙂 (loving making things so positive). And this store does everything in its power to keep those shelves and racks bursting with goodies. (They do excel at this) 🙂

IMG_1066

This shop can definitely double or even triple its space easily just to hold the donations they have on hand alone. The quality of clothing donations is mostly good but with patience, there are some great high quality pieces. You will find lots of jeans, tee shirts, shoes and casual wear with an extensive houseware section that you would normally see in a much larger store. They carry men, women and children’s clothing so there is a lot to go through Where the real treasures are when you first walk into the store to the right side sits some fabulous home décor, pictures and almost new or brand new items.

IMG_1064
IMG_1063

I have seen some stunning artwork, exquisite candle holders and so many other wonderful decor just waiting for a new home 🙂 .

The shop has been under new management for some time and Donna really puts her heart and soul into the shop and she is more than fair in her pricing.

Patience is the key in this shop!!!!!
